So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish

先日『銀河ヒッチハイク・ガイド』の映画版を久しぶりに観て、またぞろダグラス・アダムス熱が上昇しています。
特に上に貼った映画のオープニングテーマ曲にハマってしまい、暇なときはこの歌ばかり口ずさんでいる。

ということで歌詞を訳してみました。

物事は必ずしも見かけの通りではない、ということは、重要かつよく認知された事実である。例えば惑星・地球では、人類は自分たちを最も知能の高い惑星の支配種族だと考えてきたが、実際には地球で３番目に知能の高い種族だった。

２番目に知能の高い生物はもちろんイルカである。興味深いことに、彼らは地球の破壊が差し迫りつつあることをずっと以前から知っていた。

イルカ達は人類に危険を報せようと何度も試みたが、彼らのメッセージのほとんどはサッカーボールを弾いたり、エサを求めて鳴き声を上げる面白い芸だと誤解されてしまった。

結局、彼らは諦めて独自の方法で地球を去ることに決めたのだった。

イルカ達の最後のメッセージは、フープをくぐり抜けながら米国国歌をハミングしつつ二回転後方宙返りを決めるという、驚くほど洗練された芸として誤解されてしまったが、実際の内容は次のようなものだった：

「さようなら、今まで魚をありがとう」

It's an important and popular fact that things are not always what they seem.For instance on the planet earth, man had always assumed that he was the most intelligent species occupying the planet, instead of the third most intelligent.The second most intelligent creatures were of course dolphins, who curiously enough had long known of the impending destruction of the planet earth.They've made many attempts to alert mankind to the danger, but most of their communications were misinterpreted as amusing attempts to punch footballs or whistle for tippets.So their intention they decided they would leave earth by their own means.The last ever dolphin message, was misinterpreted as a surprisingly sophisticated attempt to do a double backward somersault, through a hoop while whisting the star spangled banner.But in fact the message was this "So long and thanks for all the fish".

来月11日はアダムス生誕60周年の記念日だそうで、イギリスで彼のバーチャル誕生会が開かれるとのことです。

死後10年経っても愛され続けているんだなあ。
